New Year’s Resolutions

December 20, 2007 at 4:36 pm (Living Deliberately)

I have to say that I am a fan of New Year’s Resolutions. I know that position is sort of out of vogue at the moment, but I am a firm believer in them. I just love the idea of starting out the new year with a fresh start, a fresh vision, and fresh goals. I’ve got a few resolutions already and I’ll try to update them as we come nearer to the start of the year:

1. Memorize 1 question a week in the Heidelberg Catechism until its fully memorized. My friend Heather and I are doing this together.

2. Finish my “Shirkers and Slackers” Bible reading program.

3. Have family devotions at breakfast every day.

4. BE FRUGAL! I’ve learned in recent weeks that being frugal is like playing a game. You are trying to beat yourself and the stores to find the best deals possible. Just take a look at this post about getting freebies at CVS. I think its pretty simple to set up a budget. We’ve had a rough budget, but we haven’t been all that obsessive about staying in it. That is going to change. My goal, however lofty and unattainable this may be, will be to feed my family a nutritious diet on $75 a week or less. This include the budget for my high raw diet. Not sure it can be done, but its worth a try AND I think if I use cash for everything, I’ll be halfway there.

5. Read to my children every day.

6. Eliminate 15-20 pounds. The plan is simple: cut out refined sugar and white stuff completely. Cut down/eliminate all dairy. Eat a high raw diet (75-80% daily). Exercise daily. The chief is reclaiming our eliptical machine and the Bowflex from his mom so that shouldn’t be too hard. He’s pledged to watch the kids for 30 minutes daily so that I can exercise. We’ll set up a DVD player in our exercise room so that I can watch movies or whatever and I’ll be set. Eliminating this excess weight also means that I’ll need to get a full physical, including bloodwork, to measure thyroid function, cholesterol and red blood cell count. These three things concern me, especially the cholesterol. I want to get a baseline so that after about 6 months or so, I can go back and see if its improved.

7. Read at least one book per month. The book list will follow.

8. Turn off the computer.

Well, its a good start. We’ll see how it turns out.

I was surprised about how accurate and measurable your New Year’s resolutions are. Anyway, I love reading your blog and I wish you all the best this coming year. God bless!
